The I'M A PRETTY LITTLE BLACK GIRL!" book follows the character "Mia" as she wakes up to see her disheveled hair "just-a going every which-a ways!", but instead of feeling like it is a bad thing, she looks at just the way she is and states, "I''m a Pretty Little Black Girl!" I'm A Pretty Little Black Girl! The I'm A Girl Collection Book 1 edition by Betty K Bynum Claire ArmstrongParod Children eBooks Reviews

It was really cute and the different shades of brown were a nice touch because yes we are black but we are so many different shadEs of black and it's important I believe that even though one maybe light or darker then the other we are black and black is beautiful. Be comfortable in your own skin no matter what you are.
This book has a great message. Reminds me of my little girls!!! They thought it was great. my 2, 10 and 11 year old girls thought it was pretty special. They are all very different but this book made them feel like the book was written just for them! Highly recommend and nice enough to gift. My daughters are black/white and I love how this includes ALL SHADES, shapes, sizes. Just BC they are light skinned I don't want them to feel any less black or proud to be. This book made them feel really special.
My 3 year old LOVES this book. I like it because the little girl featured is so whimsical and silly just like a real kid without being syrupy sweet like many other books for this age child. The book promotes self esteem, cooperative play, as well as loving and supporting your friends. This is a good book to affirm little black girls of all hues. Good stuff.
A child at school was having a problem with her skin color so I bought this book for her to understand that God made all different colors of people
My 4 y/o daughter loves this book and asks that I read it every night. I adore the illustrations and greatly appreciate the diverse group of black girls with their own unique style, gifts and talents. I also respect that it teaches that beauty isn't just on the outside but it's how one acts and treats others. Great lesson!

It's an easy read and celebrates being a black girl. Though I give it 5 stars, I have a couple of concerns
1. The lack of a male figure in the book. I know it's supposed to celebrate being a black girl, but the book opens and closes with the girl at home with her little baby sister. At home, the girl interacts only with her mother and there's no sign of her father. Nothing wrong if this is a single parent household, but it could've been great to at least have dad in one background picture. It's far too often that it's perceived that black men are absent in their children's lives, and we should use every opportunity to combat that stereotype.

2. Some of the speech of the girl is in broken English, and when I read it aloud to my daughter I find myself fixing it so as to not teach her the wrong way sentences are structured. I know that this is how some people speak; even I do at times. Maybe I'm being nick picky, but I grow weary of seeing grown adults speak like this and I am confident it came from being taught the wrong way and never being properly corrected. Maybe I'm wrong to bring this up, but that's how I feel.

Regardless, hands down this is a great book, and I do wish there were more books celebrating what it means to be "I'm black and I'm proud".
Affirmation in the most beautiful way. What I love about this story is that it is not egotistical. It is a story of one young lady who knows her worth so she can affirm the beauty in the diverse black friends in her circle.

The author writes in a way that unfolds in rhymes and positivity. The features and beauty of black girls- all shapes, sizes, and shades is praised. I am so glad I bought this book I ordered it again for a friend.

It is a celebration of us! Any woman of color at any age will love this book! Read on!
This has quickly become my 4 yr old daughter's favorite book. Within a week she had it memorized and would quote her favorite passages before I would even get to them. We live in Orange County, CA where there isn't a lot of diversity. She and her little sister are 1 of 4 black girls in her daycare/preschool. I feel like it's important to expose her to different cultures, especially her own. This book and the "Color of Us" (her other favorite), reminds her that there are so many beautiful shades of brown (including white people) and that she's "A Pretty Little Black Girl."
